BitchTapesCelebrating Black Women Musicians

Donald Trump tried it. He thought declaring June African American Music Appreciation Month—something Jimmy Carter began in 1979—would persuade Black folks to overlook his administration’s blatant bigotry. Although his motivation is skewed, African American Music Appreciation Month matters. It’s a chance to reflect on the social contributions of Black musicians. For this BitchTape, we’ve compiled a list of Black women who have shaped music in R&B, hip hop, soul, funk, and everything in between.
