I won’t tell you this is urgent. I won't reduce today to a dollar amount or a deadline.
But I will ask you to read this short note all the way through, because what I’m about to say is something we’ve been talking about a lot at the HQ. Honestly.
Giving Tuesday is important: How things tally up at midnight tonight can indicate whether an organization will end the year short, or with the chance to catch a breath before ringing in 2016.
But let's get straight to the point. Here are three truths we grapple with every day at the HQ:
1. Every day is Giving Tuesday for Bitch. We might as well be talking about a Friday in March, or a Monday in July. To be truly a reader-supported, nonprofit, feminist media organization means to ask for support. Constantly.
2. We’re proud that we hold steadfast in our independent values. We ask you for support because the very nature of what we do means that we won't take big checks from controlling pockets—we won’t allow corporate cash to undermine our independence.
3. We don't like pushing urgent deadlines to meet funding shortfalls. We know you don't either.
The reason we’re always up against an urgent deadline is a combination of #2 and this: People donate at the last possible minute. So here’s one last truth:
We need Bitch readers to donate and become members because you believe that feminism changes pop culture, and that pop culture has the power to change the world. And we hope you agree that Bitch plays a critical role in moving feminism forward.
Next year—our 20th anniversary!—promises to build off of the enormous momentum we’ve generated over the last twelve months here at Bitch. But first, we’ve got to close the books on 2015.
Today, I’m asking you to help us buck the last-minute-urgent-deadline trend. It's going to take 181 new members and at least 680 one-time gifts of $25 or more to reach our goal by December 31—and how things shake out today will set the tone for the next four weeks.
Can we reach these two critical year-end goals without ringing an alarm? Let's see!
