Keep Bitch Independent: And Other Serious News

This time last year, the world thought feminism had won.

Feminist media outlets funded by venture capital were springing up left and right, celebrities were not only invoking the F-word but making it a feature of their brands, and we believed that we were on the brink of electing the first woman president of the United States of America. Remember that?

We were so young, so hopeful, and so wrong.

Last year, people began asking us: Now that feminism has gone mainstream, is Bitch Media still necessary? This year? Well. 2017 has answered with a resounding, gut-punching: Yes.

Right now, Bitch is at our most vulnerable. We need your helpReally, right now.

We’re up against a fast-approaching deadline to meet a $30,000 matching-gift challenge by May 31, and I know you know that every single dollar matters when it comes to our work. With just 8 days to go, we have $16,363 left to raise

Can you join the B-Hive right away? Your first month will be matched dollar for dollar, and you’ll get a subscription to award-winning Bitch magazine in print and digital, a mug, a special tote bag available only for this campaign, and more.

How about making a one-time donation of $25 or $50 or $500

It’s gotten easier to sell a t-shirt that states your feminist bona fides and lipsticks that claim to flip the bird at this President. In a 180-degree shift from our early years, these days there are plenty of brands willing to write us huge checks so we’ll tell you just how empowered you’ll feel using their nail polish or underpants or cookbooks.

But funding independent feminist media that isn’t manipulated by capitalist messages or driven by corporate profits? That work is harder than ever.

We’re not here to write policy or change laws. But feminist media is doing something crucial: We’re changing minds, sparking conversations, and nurturing a community. Bitch has always been about creating media that challenges the mainstream discourse, whether in pop culture or in politics. Bitch has also always recognized that what’s important might not always be what’s popular. And I can say with absolute certainty that we’d have closed our doors a long time ago if we had relied, even for a single day, on advertising dollars to keep this operation afloat.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that we’re not going to be able to continue doing this work unless we reach our $30,000 fundraising goal.

The good news is that you have the opportunity to make a really big difference in this campaign thanks to this matching grant, which will double the impact of any gift you make now through May 31. If you make a one-time donation of $25, that’s $50 for Bitch. Can you give $100 to your favorite feminist media organization that could? That will immediately become $200.

But if you really want to step up your support, join the B-Hive today. Your $8 (or $10 or $20, you choose!) monthly donation will not only get doubled thanks to the matching grant and help us reach our $30,000 goal, you’ll also get a limited-edition Bitch Media tote bag exclusively for B-Hive members to show the world you’re part of the hive.

By supporting Bitch you’re supporting an organization that reaches 5 million people every year. That’s 5 million future voters, or 5 million future community organizers, or hell, 5 million people better equipped to call out a creep on a subway or a sexist professor in the classroom. That’s 5 million more people with the words and the will to stand up for one another.

And we sure could use more of that in the world.

A lot of you might not know this—and bless those of you who remember—but Bitch almost closed in 2008 and I always think about how risky it is to believe that we’ll still be here tomorrow, or the next day, to do this work. When you reject a market-driven, beholden-to-investors funding model so you can make 100 percent feminist media, it’s never not a gamble.

It’s only May, and many of us—and surely many of you—are already exhausted. But every time I feel the weight of all the things we must now push back against, I remember: That’s exactly how this administration wants us to feel. Both capitalism and patriarchy are designed to wear down our resistance. And we absolutely cannot let them win.

We need you in order to make this work. We’re 8 days away from the end of our campaign and still have $16,363 left to raise.

Please join the B-Hive or donate whatever you can today. Every contribution will be matched, dollar for dollar, and right now?

We can use all of the momentum and support we can get.
