On Our Radar: Feminist News Roundup

Hey, it's Wednesday! here's what we're reading today:

• After the Paris attacks, some Republican politicians are pushing the idea that we should reject Syrian refugees—Jeb Bush abhorrently suggested only welcoming Christian Syrians to the United States. [The Atlantic]

• Speaking from the Philippines, President Obama condmened that kind of anti-refugee rhetoric, saying, “We are not well served when, in response to a terrorist attack, we descend into fear and panic. We don’t make good decisions if it’s based on hysteria or an exaggeration of risks.” [Guardian]

Mass surveillance is not the answer to fighting terrorism—giant data collection hasn't led to stopping any attacks in the United States, though the CIA has misled the public by saying it is effective. [New York Times]

• The latest in a series of tiresome investigations of Planned Parenthood has revealed that the organization did absolutely nothing illegal when taking fetal tissue for donation to medical research. [Mother Jones]

• Meanwhile, with increasing barriers to getting a safe, legal abortion, it appears that more women are turning to self-induced abortions. A new study estimates that least 100,000 women in Texas have tried to self-induce an abortion. [Feministing]

• A new documentary called Rising Voices explores the effort to save the Lakota language. The film premieres on the World Channel tonight. [Colorlines]

• Writer Dorothy Snarker explores the changing nature of LGBT characters in film, asking, “When will we stop tempering our queer characters?” [Women and Hollywood]

• Check out this new video about why public transit is so sparse around the United States. [Grist]
