Devi was born in Northern India in 1963. She was married off at 11 and later abandoned by her husband for disobedience. The so-called “Bandit Queen” then led a troop who carried out Robin Hood–style robberies. After a brutal assault when she was 18, Devi gunned down 21 men in retaliation. Upon her prison release, she won a seat in India’s Parliament and advocated for women and the poor. In 2001, she was assassinated outside her home.
