B-Sides: Lykke Li/Adele/Bikini Kill Videostravaganza!

It’s a good day to be a feminist music fan, but to quote the immortal words of Levar Burton, “You don’t have to take my word for it!” You can see/hear for yourself, because today’s B-Sides is bringing you not one, not two, but three awesome ladymusic-related videos to brighten up your workday Tuesday. Lykke Li! Adele! Bikini Kill! Let’s get to it!

Lykke Li, “Get Some” (Trigger Warning: Some of the background footage depicts violent images)

Lykke Li’s new video is sexy, dark, and a more than a little creepy (perfect for these November days, don’t you think?). With its images of pentagrams, chastity belts, fireside rituals, and what appears to be a fashion-forward vagina dentata, “Get Some” delivers a message of power and female sexuality (though decoding that message may require multiple viewings—there’s a lot going on here). Li and the other women in the video take vintage-style sexual tropes (pin-ups on the beach and in the jungle) and subvert them, changing the connotations of the phrase “get some” from sex to ass-kicking. At least, that’s where I’m at in my interpretation so far. The song is great, and I love how commanding Li is in her performance. I can’t wait for her next tour!

Adele, “Rolling in the Deep

Yay, Adele is releasing a new album! This video combines footage of her latest studio session with her new single, “Rolling in the Deep.” I don’t know about you, but the more I watch this video the more I wish that Adele and I were best friends. She could help me pick out clothes and do my hair like hers, and I could hang out with her in the studio and listen to her awesome songs all day long. Hey, it could happen!

Lucy Thane, “Bikini Kill in the UK” (this is a screen shot because the video is non-embeddable)

This short film documents a 1993 Bikini Kill and Huggy Bear tour of the U.K. Also featured: the Raincoats, Sister George, and Skinned Teen, and interviews with all bands and many girls at shows. If you, like me, were just a little bit too young and dorky to have ever experienced 90s riot grrrl live, this is a great look at some awesome feminist bands.
