The number one song in the country right now is “Uptown Funk,” the catchy tune by Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars that seems to be playing on every radio. Seeing the song top the charts made me realize that I know nothing about female funk musicians. Who are the must-hear ladies of funk?
Knowledgable music people Jordannah Elizabeth, Douglas Wolk, and Karl Sigel suggested most of the songs for this mix. If you know a song that you think would be a good addition to the mix, let me know in the comments. I’m always excited about finding out about more good music.

...here are a few additions:
Joan Armatrading- Join the Boys from her self-titled album
Nina Simone- Funkier than a Mosquito's Tweeter from It Is Finished
Definitely check out Isis - an all-woman funk band fronted by an out lesbian back in the 70's. Favorite track: Bobbie and Maria from the "Isis" album.
