Happy Mother’s Day to all the mamas out there! Here is a mix for those who love their moms and love hearing songs about these powerful women. Go grab your mom and have a listen while thanking her for creating the feminist who sits beside her!
1. 2Pac - Dear Mama
‘Pac appreciates his mama and dedicates this jam to the hardtimes that he put her through.
2. Meredith Brooks - Bitch
“I’m a little bit of everything all rolled into one. I’m a bitch, I’m a lover, I’m child, I’m a mother, I’m a sinner, I’m saint. I do not feel ashamed.” Double-binds be gone! Mothers are multi-faceted individuals with talents, hopes, aspirations, faults and shortcomings. Let’s celebrate this!
3. Tracy Bonham - Mother, Mother
If you’re mom has ever asked you how things were and you lied and said ‘fine,’ this song could be your anthem!
4. The Shirelles - Mama Said
Sometimes I use this song as a stand-in for my mama’s hugs.
5. Kimya Dawson - My Mom.
“As long as she is haunted, she’ll never get strong. My mom needs you gone.”
6. Jann Arden - Good Mother
This song was part of my feminist awakening, ah, memories.
7. Linda Draper - Mother’s Little Helper (Rolling Stones cover)
“Life’s just much too hard today, I hear every mother say.”
**CHEESE ALERT**
8. Celine Dion - Because You Loved Me
I know, I know … BUT, Celine is one of my mom’s favorites and what kind of kid would I be if I didn’t include this “classic” on a mixtape especially for mothers? Enjoy the holiday, folks!

I love both the original by Tracy Bonham and the cover by The Veronicas. I thought of them today while reading Kelsey's post but figured the song was too cynical for the maternal appreciation tone.
Anyway, I really enjoyed this mix and its diversity. Other possibilities: "Mama I'm a Big Girl Now" from the Hairspray stage musical, and, at a bit of a stretch, "Mother We Just Can't Get Enough" by the New Radicals.
And, what the hell, there's "Mama" by the Spice Girls. It's a little moms-are-perfect-and-do-nothing-wrong for my tastes, but it's still Spice.

What about those few of us who don't have mothers? I think there should be a Motherless day for all of the girls and women who grew up without theirs.
The classic is a nice touch

The classic is a nice touch but what about other classics such as the Spice Girls' "Mama" or Boyz II Men's "A Song for Mama"? ;)
