One of the things I used to love about making an actual mix tape when I was just a pup was packaging it up and sending it off in the mail, waiting for a response.
My sister Julia, a writer and musician herself, and I had parents into (mostly) classical music convincing us to take piano, etc. We subsequently spent adolecence, high school, and college uncomfortably debating how much we wanted to let them know we liked Prince, then prog rock, hip hop, then…well, I'm not sure how far either of us decided to go. Not very. But as we cemented our own tastes, and learned that we actually respected and loved theirs too, there were occasional mixed tapes (or CDs) even for them, usually centered around an instrument.
This week, we decided to play mix tape “tennis”, batting songs between NYC and Portland that included keyboard or flute to broaden our horizons. And wax a bit nostalgic. Enjoy.
