Today’s BitchTapes is dedicated to that traditional end-of-summer treat… (no, not fudgesicles!) The Road Trip. So play on playa, 8 songs for, and about, the joys of the open road.
Whether you’re headed to the beach, the woods, the desert, or your mom’s back porch, a trip down the highway is as American as… Well, driving I guess. But still, the road trip is about bonding with your fellow travelers, seeing the sights, maintaining the speed limit (riiiight), eating delicious snacks from service stations and, oh yeah, blasting some serious tuneage.
Magic Carpet Ride: Steppenwolf
The only thing better than a car trip might be a magic carpet trip. Also, the opening 45 seconds of this song make me want to run out the door of where I am and drive fast with the windows down on my way to something epic. I usually keep myself under control.
Runnin’ Down a Dream: Tom Petty
First verse of this song=self explanatory.
The only thing better than this song might be the music video. Warning: Do not watch and drive.
This Year: The Mountain Goats
I was going to use a different song by The Mountain Goats, but this one included the phrase “pedal to the metal” so my decision was made.
Eisenhower is the Father: Best Friends Forever
A history lesson about the interstate highway system and some adorable “twee pop”. Best to listen to while eating Skittles—doesn’t everyone have a point in their road trip while they eat Skittles?
On the Road Again: Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash
Although half of the Highwaymen might be missing on this song, you still get Johnny and Willie. Together. Yup.
Down South, 10 Hours, I-5: All Girl Summer Fun Band
Bonus points for an I-5 reference. it is, personally, my most frequently traveled stretch of federally-maintained pavement.
Take It Easy: The Eagles
“Don’t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy…” Or the sound of a mix repeated too many times. Shake it up; suggest your own road-trip-mix favorites in the comments section!
