BitchTapes: Queens of Dark + Ethereal Wave a la 80s

Do you remember what you were listening to back in the fifth grade? Lucky for me, I had a cool older cousin with plenty of 80s vinyl and a handful of CDs before compact discs were the craze. Every Friday evening, before heading out with his high school friends, he'd thumb through sleeves of what he called 'mod' and 'new wave' music. Sometimes he'd let me pick the next record to pop on the player while he ironed his silk button-up, coiffed his hair and bleached bangs, and perfumed the house with Obsession cologne. Phew-y!

To this day I still pooh-pooh Obsession, but continue to love all that 80s mood music. Here's to the haunting lyrics, heavy snyths, and syncopated bass rifts of my youth. May the mood be with you.

1. Dead Can Dance - Carnival of Light (1984)
I want to be an idioglossist just like Lisa.

2. Siouxsie and The Banshees - Dazzle (1984)
Robert Smith played guitar on this album, Hyæna.

3.Cocteau Twins - Lorelei (1984)

4. Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) (1985)

5. Xmal Deutschland - Incubus Succubus II (1984)
Aus Deutschland und die Gruppe ist alle Frauen – Das ist toll! When the group later sang in English, things, as they say, got lost in translation.

6. Joy Division - Isolation (1980)
Dark wave isn't complete without a bit of emotive post-punk (and Ian Curtis was Queen + King of the domain).

7. New Order - Cries & Whispers on Everything's Gone Green 12” (1981)
Someone screwed up big time… this song is mistitled as Mesh on New Order's Substance 1987 album. Ouch! Or, it was planned.

8. Q Lazzarus - Goodbye Horses (1988)
Did anyone else buy The Married to the Mob soundtrack just for this song?
