BitchTapes: Rock On, Canada!

feminist mixtapes

Living in Canada for the past 16 years of my life, I've been fortunate enough to be exposed to the incredible array of Canadian talent this country has to offer. When I'm visiting other Canadian cities, I'm always interested in finding female talent—often Canadian ladies are overshadowed by the enormous catalog of American music. This mix includes my new favourite band So Young, hailing from London, Ontario and one of my all time favourites, Die Mannequin (who've taken on a different sound with their new record Neon Zero). Plus, there's a track from Annie Hall, a well-known DJ who hails from my current city in Windsor and the Juno Award-winning Grimes. Enjoy!

Rock On, Canada from BitchTapes on 8tracks Radio.

Track List:
Grimes - Realiti

Die Mannequin - Blood In Blood Out The Courtneys - 90210 So Young - Sixteen Purity Ring - Begin Again Pony - My Only One Metric - Twilight Galaxy Annie Hall - Wine and Beats Blue Hawaii - Yours to Keep No Joy - Lunar Phobia

So happy to have found

So happy to have found BitchTape this morning. Thank you very much. Speaking of Canadian talent, Terra Lightfoot from Hamilton, ON is worth a listen! Cheers.

Some additional, older artists to check out!

Please allow me to suggest a few older artists for your feminist playlist consideration:

Lost & Profound (90s folk rock)
Me Mom and Morgentaler (90s Montreal ska!)
K.D. Lang (HELLOOO people! country, torch, and queer cowpunk Queen!)
Mary Margaret O'Hara (namely for her 1988 cult classic Miss America album where she is viscerally experimental with her voice and singing)
Meryn Cadell (90s alt-Canadian-feminist-queer sensation with 2+ albums)

A commentor on the fb thread also suggested these artists, which I second!
Joni Mitchell (a folk legend)
Buffy Sainte Marie (an indigenous folk-rock legend)
Sarah McLachlin (alternative and rock)
Jane Siberry (alternative)
Cowboy Junkies (alternative, country)
