Feminist Media: Hell Bent On Changing The World

The Blue Issue of Bitch magazine has such a gorgeous cover, doesn’t it?

It’s so easy to be disappointed in media.

These days, mainstream outlets spend millions of dollars repackaging empty stories from elsewhere with clickbait headlines in exchange for pageviews and advertiser dollars. It can be really tough to cut through the noise. Instead of focusing on the cheap and easy, Bitch pushes boundaries and supports a diverse collection of smart, rigorous writers. You’ll never read a headline at Bitch about what you need to do to achieve the right “post-baby” body or find a list of the top 10 t-shirts to buy to be the best feminist.

What allows Bitch to be an essential, ethical, clued-in platform for feminist media? Support from readers like you.

Without readers pitching in, we would never be able to publish the kind of feminist analysis that sticks with you. Like insights from Joumana Haddad—the publisher of the world’s only Arab-language erotica magazine—who swiftly knocks down Western stereotypes of the passive Arab woman. Or Sarah Marshall’s smart take on Mad Max, an action-film that complicates typical action-hero masculinity. Or Leela Ginelle’s commentary that in the new Seth MacFarlane blockbuster, a dirty talking stuffed bear gets more respect than transgender people.

These exceptional stories would never be funded, let alone published, by most mainstream media outlets. The old-boys-clubs that run those TV news and gobble up radio stations really don’t want to hear it from a bunch of feminists hell-bent on changing the world—let alone host it in their papers, or on their sites. Just this week, we reported on how BBC News had a policy of keeping older women broadcasters off the air.

And that’s why we’re here. To do that work. To publish those voices. And to push those boundaries.

So I’m asking you today to make an investment in feminism. Your subscription, renewal or gift subscription to Bitch magazine on sale for 30 percent, new monthly membership (you get a subscription to Bitch with your membership!), or one-time donation make our feminist response to pop culture a reality, and we need your support more now than ever.

Before you do anything else this Saturday, please take a second to pitch in for Bitch. Don’t forget—every dollar you contribute to Bitch Media this month is matched by a donation, dollar for dollar, up to $30,000.

We’ve got $18,207 left to raise in order to meet this $30,000 match, and we’ve got just 9 days to get there. If you’ve ever sighed at the quality of media, now is your chance to invest in smart feminist analysis—and to make it count for double.

So subscribe to Bitch magazine on sale (it’s a great deal!), become a member (membership includes cool stuff: tote bags, stickers, notebooks… as subscription to Bitch…), or make a one-time donation. Every dollar makes a difference!

I can’t thank you enough for your generosity. Let’s reach this goal!
