Jeanne Zelasko = Meg White?

So, as I was looking into this whole WIN Network thing, I ran into this post from about Jeanne Zelasko, about whom I wrote in my previous post. Seems a few months ago Zelasko made it known to the Dodgers powers that be that she wanted to be considered as the play-by-play announcer for a package of 50 away games for the team.

She was not even allowed into the running.

The Internet scuttlebutt—as epitomized by the BBTF commenters—about the situation leans heavily toward the, “It’s not because she’s a woman; it’s because she sucks” variety.
I haven’t seen enough of her work for me to argue one way or the other, but I have to say, this line of reasoning seems awfully common whenever a woman enters into a traditionally male realm. It’s the ol’ Meg White argument: Oh, I don’t hate her because she’s a woman, it’s because she’s a shitty drummer! As if there have never been any male shitty drummers in the history of the world.

I’m going to spend the next couple of days checking out the archives of Zelasko’s WIN play-by-play and see if she truly does suck as hard as everyone says she does. I doubt she does. Which means of course, there must be some other reason why folks are so offended by the idea of her in the broadcast booth. Hmm…I wonder what it could be?
In the meantime, check out the BBTF blog comments and let us know what you think.

As a person who watches Fox Saturday baseball on occasion, I will say she's not a great studio talent in my opinion. Andrea Kremer, Alex Flanagan, Suzy Kolber, and Dana Jacobsen (haven't seen Dana do studio work but she does some I believe) are all better than Zelasko in the studio. I have no clue as to her play-by-play, but that is usually a tougher task to do well.

I like Meg White's drumming.

I like Meg White's drumming. It works for The White Stripes.

This woman may suck (I don't watch sports of any kind so I wouldn't know one way or the other), and we wouldn't want her to be the "token" woman commentator who is there because of her sex and not her credentials. She should have still been put into the running at least, that way she could have been compared to her colleagues instead of just thrown out before given the chance.
