On Our Radar: Feminist News Roundup

Hoo boy. I’m so tired from staying up to watch last night’s lunar eclipse that it’s hard to make sentences. Bear with me as I walk through all the feminist news on our radar this morning:

• The NYPD has been spying on mosques around New York for years, but a judge recently ruled that the spying is legal. Colorlines breaks down how this case impacts everyone, regardless of religion. [Colorlines]

• Why do men think they’re so great? Two reporters set out to explore the gendered “confidence gap.” [The Atlantic]

• Transgender Phoenix activist Monica Jones was convicted of prostitution last week in a case that advocates say is partly politically motivated. She was sentenced to serve time in a men’s jail and is appealing the case. All this goes to show why trying to “rescue” sex workers by arresting them is a bad idea. [TransGriot, Bitch]

• An analysis of race in Britain’s universities shows that black and Asian students are underrepresented as students and professors in the country’s top schools. [The Conversation]

• The genius of new Comedy Central show Broad City is that its female duo are imperfect and silly without being self-loathing. [Guardian]

• It’s true, I knew it! A new study shows that couples are much more likely to get upset with each other when they’re really hungry. [NPR]

• A new zine called Black Kid in the Candy Store is looking to explore black queer and trans experiences with non-monogamy. Send ‘em your story! [Tumblr]

• Here’s another cool queer zine project that’s looking for submissions: I Don’t Do Boxes is documenting queer experiences in the South and is looking for stories about music, bands, and the power of songs. [Elsewhere]
