Here’s what we’re reading today:

• The story of transgender teen Leelah Alcorn is heartbreaking—she committed suicide and left a note on Tumblr reading, “The only way I will rest in peace is if one day transgender people aren’t treated the way I was, they’re treated like humans, with valid feelings and human rights.” [The Frisky] 

• Nicki Minaj speaks openly about her abortion and being pro-choice during her interview with Rolling Stone. [Jezebel]

• Laurie Penny writes about “nerd entitlement” and that being bullied for being a nerd is different than the structural oppression of sexism and racism. [New Statesman] 

• Pope Francis believes climate change is a serious threat and says he plans to take it on in 2015. [Mother Jones]

• Revenge porn has been made illegal in Illinois and could lead to harsh punishment. [Huffington Post]

• The mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, was recently heckled at a police academy graduation due in part to his support of anti-police-brutality demonstrations. [Reuters]

• The New York Times has an excellent editorial aimed at the New York city police, by the way. They write, “What New Yorkers expect of the Police Department is simple: 1. Don’t violate the Constitution. 2. Don’t kill unarmed people. To that we can add: 3. Do your jobs.” [New York Times]
