On Our Radar: Feminist News Roundup

on our radar

Happy Monday. Here’s what we’re reading today:

• A massive earthquake in Nepal has left thousands of people dead and many more thousands homeless. As the Guardian reports, what the victims have in common is that they’re poor—they couldn’t afford to build homes that would withstand the quake. [Guardian]

• Reality TV star and Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner made national news over the weekend by coming out as transgender during an interview with Diane Sawyer. [Autostraddle]

Eight women in Los Angeles are fasting to call attention to the national campaign to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour. [Colorlines]

• The alleged rapist who spurred Columbia Unversity student Emma Sulkowicz’s “Carry That Weight” project is now suing the school for “failing to protect him from harassment.” [Feministing]

• Comedian Cecily Strong killed it at the White House Correspondents Dinner with jokes about reproductive rights and the absurdity of media reporting on Hillary Clinton’s outfits. [Vanity Fair]

• Check out this queer romantic short film project This Is You And Me. [Kickstarter]

• I loved this interview with current jazz musician José James about the music and radical legacy of Billie Holiday. [Latino USA]
