On Our Radar: Feminist News Roundup

Here’s the feminist news on our radar today:

• The use of the filibuster for presidential nominees in the Senate has been severely limited as of yesterday, but this still won’t affect filibustering against legislation. [Slate]

• Vaginas are “like Hoover vaccuums” and other things abstinence teachers tell kids. [Mother Jones]

• The male gaze, unsurprisingly, gets carried over in a publication that calls itself “a magazine that is for everybody.” [Feminist Current]

• People who are willing to speak out in favor of prison reform often forget that violent offenders are humans, too, and they suffer from the same forms of injustice as non-violent drug offenders. [This Ain’t Livin’]

• Feminists, like disability rights activists, should be skeptical of the ways that capitalism values bodies that can work for pay more than bodies that can’t. [Feministing]

• Lots of people are excited about the GoldieBlox commercial that turns the Beastie Boys’ “Girls” into a song about their engineering toys marketed to girls. It’s important to be conscious, though, of how marketing empowerment to girls can still be based on harmful gender stereotypes. [XX Factor, Pigtail Pals & Ballcap Buddies]

• A bunch of data about how men who know women become less awful leads to spurious conclusions about how women can fix all the sexism just by being around and ‘civilizing’ the men they know. People don’t need to understand gender inequality, they just need to know a lady! [The Atlantic]

• Rapper and producer Sammus is making a nerdcore EP to honor the legacy of her namesake, Samus Aran, a badass character from the classic Nintendo game Metroid, and she needs some funding. [Kickstarter]
