Stand with Planned Parenthood: Sign-Making Open Thread!

Boehner signAs you’ve probably heard by now, the House voted last week to cut federal funding for Title X, which would in turn U.S. bar Planned Parenthood health centers from all federal funding. If you’re reading Bitch, you probably agree with us that this is a bunch of completely outrageous bullshit. If you haven’t already signed the online petition to let the House and Senate know that you stand with Planned Parenthood, do so right now. OK, did you do it? Great! Now let’s do more!

Planned Parenthood is also organizing rallies at health centers around the country. A couple of us went to one here in Portland yesterday and it was awesome. Tons of energized people, and some really great rally signs and chants. Check the PP website to find out where they’re happening in your area! And in the meantime, let’s come up with some signs to make and take with us to these rallies, shall we?

Yesterday at the rally I was really wishing that I’d come up with a clever sign for the cause. (For examples, check out the photo above and this one below, taken by Bitch contributor Sarah Mirk.) There’s another rally coming up here on Friday, and there are more this week all over the country. Share your sign ideas so that we can all show up prepared to fight for women’s reproductive rights with our wits about us (and on our signs)!

At our staff meeting today, we came up with a few to get the ball rolling:

You can’t spell uterus without U.S.!

Don’t ex Title X!

You down with P.P.? Yeah you know me!

Title X marks the spot!

And some chants for good measure:

Ho ho! Hey hey! Federal funding’s got to stay!

Women, United! Will never be divided!

Women’s health care is under attack! What do we do? Stand up! Fight back!

Tell the folks on Capitol Hill: Don’t take away our birth control pills!

If you like safe sex, save Title X!

And if all else fails, print out this picture from the Planned Parenthood Facebook page and take it with you to the rally (there are lots of good sign ideas on there, FYI):

Got any more ideas? Leave them in the comments section for all to share! See you at Planned Parenthood!

Sign Quotes

A few friends and I made some signs for a protest we are attending this Saturday, and here are some of the quotes we came up with:

"Keep your Boehner out of my vagina."

"Keep your rosaries off my ovaries."

"A condom is easier to change than a diaper."

"If you can't trust me with a choice, how can you trust me with a child?"

"The last time we mixed politics and religion, people were burned at the stake."

I LOVE these! Keep your rosaries off my ovaries is great! haha

Lol best one yet!

These are great! "If you

These are great! "If you can't trust me with a choice, how can you trust me with a child?" is so good!

Awesome, Jackie! I especially love, "If you can't trust me with a choice, how can you trust me with a child?"

Attention Indy PP Supporters

Attention all Planned Parenthood supporters in Indiana: There are efforts to defund PP on a state AND national level. Rally with us at the statehouse on March 8th and bring all your great signs! Unfortunately Mike Pence is from Indiana, lets show the nation that he DOES NOT represent us. Let's redefine hoosier into something we can be proud of!!

PP Closing

To anyone who lives by a PP: PLEASE show up to the rallies! On June 30, 2009, the only Planned Parenthood in my city (El Paso, TX) closed, and it was such a depressing and sad day for the community. It was closed due to financial strains. As women, we cannot let this happen to all of the PPs in the country. We cannot let our reproductive rights be controlled and essentially eradicated by the government.

What makes me angry about all this

Is that abortion and birth control are the SOLE reasons for this de-funding. Planned Parenthood is about SO VERY MUCH MORE THAN abortion and birth control. IT'S ABOUT KEEPING PEOPLE HEALTHY!

Forgive my "shouting," but I know so many people with general health issues that use Planned Parenthood for their health care because they have no access to even the emergency room. The death rates from preventable diseases is spiraling out of control enough. They will just keep on spiraling with these funding cuts.

Keep up the standing-out, shouting-out, and all other actions in support of Planned Parenthood. Everyone I know that uses them for their health care are thanking you!

Every time you tell me what I can or can't do with my body, an aborted Jesus kitten cries.

yes but...

While PP is about keeping "people" healthy, it's primarily about keeping female people and poorer people healthy, and they're really not people, right? At least not according to those (disproportionally male) people who are in positions of power.

Yes, that's primarily why

Yes, that's primarily why Planned Parenthood began. But the last three times I was there I saw a lot more men than women in the waiting room. I think this is a point we really have to make, especially if sexism is involved.

"Trust Women" - in honor of

"Trust Women" - in honor of Dr. Tiller

"Ignore Your Rights And They Will Go Away" - Applicable for most rallies

"My Family Stands With Planned Parenthood"

I like the last one. Mostly

I like the last one. Mostly because of the assumption that we hate family because we are feminist and prochoice. Granted I would probably never take my one-year old to a rally, it is important that people realize that it is about CHOICE. Not pushing our views on to others or trying to superimpose our situation onto someone else. Wehave the ability to recognize and have empathy for women who have to make these hard decisions and the rationality to know that magic man from the sky isn't going to just take care of everything if someone gets pregnant, isn't ready and has no resources.

"FUCK the church, FUCK the

"FUCK the church, FUCK the state, WOMEN will decide their fate!"

Hmm, I can't seem to find any

Hmm, I can't seem to find any information on any possible rally in Los Angeles, which is surprising.

I really liked one sign that I saw in an image a while back, "I should not have to be here" which I think says quite a lot. I think if I had to make a sign I might want to make one that says, "Hermione Granger would not approve." because she totally wouldn't, on more than one level.

Keep your huff off of my

Keep your huff off of my muff!

I find changing "Women's

I find changing "Women's right are under attack..." to "Human rights are under attack, what do we do? Stand up, fight back!" is useful in 1.) framing women's health issues as not special interest and 2.) acknowledging that not everyone with "ladyparts" is a lady and vice versa (yay queer solidarity). What do you think?

My kid's sign

I'm bringing my 15 month old son and his sign will say "I lived in Mommy's womb long enough to know the government should stay out of it"

PP detected my sister's cancer

I may go to a rally in New York. I think will hold a sign that says something like, "PP detected my sister's cervical cancer. PP is pro-life... my sister's life!" Also, my friend is thinking of holding a sign her mom used to hold at rallies. It quotes Gloria Steinem saying, “If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament.”

How about a good dose of hard

How about a good dose of hard truth to blow the anti-women mind? PLANNED PARENTHOOD PREVENTS ABORTION

The San Diego State University Women's Center and the young women of San Diego
are holding a reproductive justice rally on March 22 at 12:15 pst to speak out
against the current bills/laws that are circling through Congress. The event will be held at Aztec Center on campus.

We are asking the feminist community to hold similar rallies throughout the nation to show support for this cause. It is time that we take back our reproductive rights and demand the health care that we need to stay healthy. Please support this effort to change the future of young women nationwide.
