Susan Faludi's The Terror Dream: Fear and Fantasy in Post-9/11 America. I'm only on page 97, but so far am (unsurprisingly, given her track record) blown away by her brilliance.
Scarlett Thomas's The End of Mr. Y. Smart, fun, will probably make you stay up way too late. I've now gone and added all her other books to my "to read" shelf on Goodreads (which, if you don't already know about it, is a treasure trove of procrastination for book lovers and a mighty fine way to keep track of your reading list).
